How to design popular psychological tests?

Tests are tools that allow people to quickly understand students’ learning conditions, job seekers’ personality traits, or the psychological states of test takers. Among these tests, psychological tests have become increasingly popular in recent years. Every once in a while, there will be psychological tests that even the old man at the corner has taken, and the entire community will be overwhelmed with news about psychological tests. So how are these wildly popular psychological tests designed? And how do they spread rapidly? If you are a brand or marketing team, how can you use psychological tests to package your marketing activities?

Easily design an appealing psychological test with four techniques!

1. Rapid and intuitive test questions: Add images and videos to make the test more vivid and understandable

Test questions with vivid images not only enrich the content but also, because of their intuitiveness, allow people to understand the questions quickly, thus increasing the response rate.

In this age where people are easily bombarded with information, the willingness to read text is gradually decreasing. We often see psychological tests like “Choose your favorite picture to reveal your true personality.” These types of psychological tests do not require reading a lot of text. Instead, one can easily complete the test by intuitively choosing which picture they prefer, often leading to a higher willingness to respond and easy dissemination, making them wildly popular psychological tests.

If the psychological test you design is more complex and requires prior explanation, you can include a video as supplementary information before the test. If you’re concerned that respondents may not watch the entire video before answering, you can activate the time-limited answering function to ensure that each respondent has watched the entire video before answering. Compared to text, presenting instructions via video makes it easier for test takers to understand. Pre-record the instructions as a video and place it before the first question, setting a time limit for answering to ensure that respondents watch the entire video before answering, which also improves the accuracy of responses.

2.Provide a friendly and smooth answering experience: Use logic-based skipping to navigate questions based on respondents’ answers

During answering, have you ever experienced this: “If you choose option A, please go to question X”? At this point, the test taker has to find the position of question X themselves, which disrupts the smoothness of the answering experience, increases the time taken for the test, and may lead to filling in the wrong question number, resulting in incorrect test results.

If you’re using SurveyCake for psychological testing, you can use the skip logic or conditional branching function to navigate or trigger relevant questions based on respondents’ answers. Respondents won’t see irrelevant questions but will instead be presented with relevant question sets based on the answers they’ve provided, naturally reducing the likelihood of answering the wrong questions. If the psychological test has a narrative, it’s even more suitable to use the logic-based skipping function. For respondents, immersing themselves in the test narrative and experiencing a friendly and smooth answering process is key.

Logic-based skipping can also be combined with Rich Text questions. According to the set logic-based skipping sequence, use the Rich Text function to present different test results, adding some interactivity to your psychological test.

3.Instantly expandable test results: Automatically calculate test results, saving time and effort

Ultimately, psychological tests aim to obtain a result. If test takers can immediately know the test results after taking the test, understanding their current situation and position, it will be an efficient test. Analyzing most popular psychological tests, tests based on scores/indexes are usually easier to share and spread (people always like to compare afterall 😂). Therefore, when designing psychological tests, try to incorporate a scoring mechanism to quantitatively assess the test, making test takers more willing to share the results.

Through pre-set calculation logic and variables, the SurveyCake system can automatically identify the corresponding scores of options and automatically calculate them based on the set logic and the test taker’s chosen options after they’ve answered all questions. The test creator doesn’t need to spend extra time grading, and they can immediately understand the situation of all test takers. For example, in the example of a social anxiety test, if the option “Pretend not to see and walk in a different direction” is chosen for the question “If you meet an old friend on the street,” then the “social points ” increases by 2 points.

👍🏻Bonus tip:

The calculation mode can not only be used in psychological tests but also in calculating group purchase amounts, satisfaction surveys, etc.

4.Redirection and conversion: Guide the next step with gratitude after completing the test

If your psychological test includes detailed analysis content, you can use the redirect button on the thank-you page to guide respondents to a pre-written blog or landing page to view the result analysis.

However, besides simply understanding psychological states, psychological tests are now more commonly used as a marketing tactic by brands or marketing teams. After all the effort to engage potential consumers through psychological tests, you wouldn’t want it to end just after they complete the test, right? Of course, you should seize the opportunity to convert them by further promoting marketing activities through the thank-you page after completing the test.

Potential consumers have already been brought into the scenario during the test. After completing the test, use the redirect button on the thank-you page to logically guide respondents to the next stage of the sales funnel. For example, if you’ve created a stress test questionnaire, after respondents complete the test, recommend stress-relief items suitable for different stress groups to generate more sales and revenue.

A psychological test with intuitive and rich test questions often makes people more willing to respond. Providing a friendly answering experience during the question process, reducing answering errors, and improving the accuracy of the test, can also strike a chord with test takers. By using a scoring design that is easy to spread, respondents can share and resonate with their friends and family. Finally! Reasonably packaging marketing activities as part of psychological tests to strengthen the connection with respondents. With these elements, your psychological test will soon become popular.

When designing questions, you can refer to the above four techniques. Wish you all the best in designing a popular psychological test!
